A Halloween charcuterie board doesn’t need elaborate decorations or hours of prep. With a mix of store-bought favorites and a few simple finishing touches, this festive appetizer is just as fun to make as it is to eat. It’s perfect for snacking on while you greet trick-or-treaters or serving as the centerpiece of your Halloween gathering.

HALLOWEEN CHARCUTARIE BOARD AT A GLANCE

  • Total Time: About 20 minutes; no cooking required
  • What to Buy: Three cheeses, two or three cured meats, crackers, fresh and dried fruit, nuts, and jam
  • How Much per Guest: For an appetizer-sized portion, plan on about 2 ounces each of meat and cheese, 6–8 crackers, and ¼ cup of fresh fruit.
  • Assembly Order: Place the anchors first, then arrange the remaining cheese, meats, fresh fruit, and crackers around them. Fill any gaps with nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate.
  • A Quick Tip: Add crackers and candy eyes just before serving so they stay crisp and hold their shape

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

To create a balanced board, aim for a mix of savory, sweet, creamy, and crunchy elements that match a rich, autumn color palette:

INGREDIENTS

Cheeses: Pick three varieties

  • An orange aged cheddar to add color
  • A firm white cheese like smoked Gouda or Manchego
  • A small wheel of Brie, Camembert, or Fromager d’Affinois

Cured Meats: Choose two or three options

  • Soppressata or Genoa salami
  • Prosciutto
  • Pepperoni

Fruits & Produce: Select up to three

  • Green and red grapes, apples, or ripe pears
  • Dried apricots, figs, or dates
  • Green olives, pickles or cornichons – adorn olives with candy eyeballs for a spooky “monster eye” look.

Assorted Crackers or Bread:

  • Multigrain/seeded crackers, water crackers, Fig and olive, or rosemary crisps
  • Breadsticks
  • Crostini

Nuts, Spreads & Extras: Add one or two of each

  • Almonds, walnuts, cashews, pistachios or candied pecans
  • jam, honey, mustard
  • Fresh herbs or edible flowers for garnish

EQUIPMENT & TOOLS

QUANTITY GUIDE: HOW MUCH TO BUY PER GUEST

Use this guide to estimate quantities based on whether your charcuterie board is an appetizer or the main meal.

Cheese2 oz3-4 oz
Cured Meat2 oz3-4 oz
Crackers/Bread6–8 crackers or 2–3 crostini10–12 crackers or 4–6 crostini

Nuts2 tablespoons4 tablespoons
Spreads1 tablespoon2 tablespoons

All quantities are per person. Adjust based on your guests’ appetites and what else you’re serving.

Quick Shopping Guide: For an appetizer board serving 6 to 8 people, plan on roughly 1 lb of cheese, 1 lb of cured meat, 1 large bunch of grapes, 1 jar of jam, and 2 boxes of assorted crackers. Add 2 tablespoon of nuts and a few chocolates for each guest.

HOW TO ARRANGE A HALLOWEEN CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Use these steps as a guide, adjusting the placement to suit your board and ingredients. Start with the larger pieces, then build around them until the board feels full and balanced.

  • Place Anchor Items First: Arrange small bowls or ramekins of jam, honey, mustard, olives, or pickles on the board, then add a wheel or wedges of cheese. Space these anchors apart, placing them near opposite corners or in a triangular layout to balance the visual weight.
  • Add Sliced & Hard Cheeses: Group slices, cubes, or wedges around the board, leaving space between them for other ingredients. Arrange them radiating outward from your anchors in a fan shape, a zigzag, or a neat row.
  • Arrange the Cured Meats. Fluff prosciutto into airy piles or ribbons, and fold salami so it takes up vertical space rather than lying flat. Tuck the meats in beside the cheeses.
  • Add Fresh and Dried Fruit:: Place larger fruit clusters (like bunches of grapes) along the edges or near the center. Scatter dried fruits (like apricots, cranberries, or figs) into open spaces between the meat and cheese sections.
  • Place the Crackers and Bread: Arrange crackers, breadsticks, or crostini in gentle, curving arcs around the meats and cheeses or fan them out along the edges. Keep different varieties in separate clusters to add contrasting shapes and textures.
  • Fill In Small Gaps: Fill the remaining gaps with small clusters of nuts and chocolate to give the board a full, balanced look.
  • Add the Finishing Touches: Garnish with edible flowers or sprigs of fresh rosemary or thyme tucked around the edges. Add cheese knives, small serving utensils, and wooden picks so guests can easily help themselves.

MAKE AHEAD & STORAGE

Transfer leftovers to an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator.

  • Prep ahead: Slice firm cheeses and wash and thoroughly dry grapes up to a day ahead. Store separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator. Cut apples and pears closer to serving to keep browning at a minimum.
  • Assemble early: Arrange cheeses, meats, and bowls a few hours ahead, then cover and refrigerate. Add crackers, nuts, chocolate, and garnishes just before serving.
  • Keep crackers crisp: Store crackers and bread separately from moist ingredients.
  • Store leftovers: Refrigerate perishable items promptly in separate containers and follow each product’s storage instructions. Discard perishables left out for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.

My Favorite Way to Use Leftovers: Turn leftover charcuterie into a chef salad! Chop the meats and cheeses, toss them with crisp greens and any leftover nuts or fruit, and finish with your favorite dressing.
